Making the Invisible Visible: Unpacking Statelessness at University of Würzburg 🎓On 8th of January, Apatride Network visited the University of Würzburg to lead a guest lecture on statelessness. The university experienced a heating system malfunction, but this did not stop us and we warmed up the lecture hall with an engaging lecture. With uncountable millions of people living without a nationality, statelessness remains invisible to the state, its legal system, and even the international organisations. Our goal was to shed light on that invisibility and its surrounding narratives with a group of a dozen highly engaged students.Inside the 3-hour Interactive Session:• Our team went beyond the surface to discuss how discrimination, state actor irrationalities and shortcomings, and gaps in birth registration leave millions in the cold, outside of legal existence.• Statelessness isn’t a monolith. We compared the lived realities of stateless individuals across different global and regional contexts.• The mission and history of Apatride Network was shared, with and how the organisation is working to center the voices of those with lived experience of statelessness.• We wrapped up with a deep-dive case study, allowing students to apply their learning to a real-world scenario and understand the complex hurdles stateless people face daily. It was inspiring to see such rigorous academic curiosity paired with genuine empathy from the participants. Education and improved awarenese is the first step toward dismantling the barriers that keep the "invisible millions" in the shadows.A big Thank You to the University of Würzburg for the invitation and to the students for their insightful contributions!#Statelessness #HumanRights #ApatrideNetwork #WürzburgUniversityHelp us reach more people about this very much overlooked subject 🙏 Did we help you better understand it?
