Globally, 24 states still do not allow women to pass on their nationality to their children, perpetuating statelessness into future generations. Over 50 states maintain gender-discriminatory nationality laws that restrict women’s ability to confer citizenship on their children or spouses on equal terms.![]()

Sexism, along with other forms of discrimination, remains a widespread and irrational shortcoming within the state system. States must undertake comprehensive legal reforms to eliminate discriminatory nationality laws and ensure that women and men can confer nationality to their children and spouses on equal terms.![]()
